Problems before prescriptions

Good teaching decisions begin with a better diagnosis.

The same visible difficulty can have different causes. A student who does not begin may lack motivation, prior knowledge, language or a clear first step. These guides are starting points for noticing more carefully—not one-size-fits-all recipes.

Support without taking over

When should I step in?

Helping too quickly can remove the thinking that produces learning. Waiting too long can turn useful effort into confusion.

What may be happening

Teachers naturally want students to succeed, so a pause or mistake can trigger an immediate explanation. Yet students may only need time, a prompt or a smaller first step. The goal is not struggle for its own sake, but supported thinking that still belongs to the learner.

A practical response

Ask what the student already knows, identify the precise sticking point and offer the smallest useful hint. Move from a question to a cue, then to a worked step only when needed. Gradually withdraw support as competence grows.

Reconnect before students withdraw

How do we prevent disengagement?

Dropping out often begins quietly: reduced participation, repeated failure or the feeling that effort will not lead anywhere.

What may be happening

Disengagement is not a single trait inside a student. It can emerge when work feels impossible, irrelevant or socially unsafe, or when prerequisite knowledge is missing. Understanding the barrier is more useful than assuming a lack of motivation.

A practical response

Create an achievable entry point, make progress visible and connect the task to a meaningful purpose. Use brief check-ins to learn whether the main barrier is knowledge, confidence, belonging, attention or something outside the lesson.

Respond to difference without labels

Do learning styles help?

Students may have preferences, but matching instruction to a fixed visual, auditory or kinaesthetic “style” has not been shown to improve learning.

What may be happening

The idea feels personal and intuitive, which makes it attractive. But labels can narrow students’ beliefs about what they can learn. The most useful representation depends primarily on the content and the thinking the lesson requires.

A practical response

Use words, diagrams, examples, demonstrations, discussion and movement when they clarify the subject—not because a learner has been assigned a type. Teach students how to use several strategies and explain why each one helps.

Make the invisible thinkable

How do I make abstract ideas clear?

Abstract concepts become meaningful when learners can connect them to examples, prior knowledge and well-chosen representations.

What may be happening

Experts can overlook how many relationships are packed into a familiar concept. Novices may hear the definition without possessing the knowledge needed to interpret it, or focus on surface features of an example.

A practical response

Begin with what students already know, compare examples and non-examples, use an analogy carefully and make the important relationship visible. Move between concrete cases and the abstract idea, checking what students notice.

Design participation, not just groups

How do I make group work work?

Putting students together does not automatically create cooperation, equal participation or meaningful learning.

What may be happening

One student may do the thinking while others watch, roles may be unclear, or the task may not require genuine interdependence. Some learners also need preparation before they feel safe enough to contribute.

A practical response

Give the group a clear shared outcome while making each learner’s thinking visible. Build in individual preparation, structured turns, useful roles and a reason to listen to one another. End with individual retrieval or explanation.

Lower barriers, keep the ambition

What if language blocks learning?

A student may understand the underlying idea but struggle to process instructions, vocabulary or the language needed to show it.

What may be happening

Unfamiliar language adds cognitive load. Long instructions, hidden assumptions and subject-specific vocabulary can consume the working-memory capacity needed for the actual learning task.

A practical response

Pre-teach essential vocabulary, shorten and sequence instructions, model the expected response and combine words with meaningful visuals. Give students opportunities to rehearse an idea orally before producing a longer answer.

Protect time for learning

Where does the lesson time go?

Time pressure often comes from transitions, unclear routines and explanations that try to carry too much at once.

What may be happening

When every activity feels equally important, the lesson can become crowded. Students then spend time decoding what to do, waiting for others or switching tasks instead of thinking about the central learning goal.

A practical response

Identify the one learning outcome that deserves protected time. Use predictable routines, concise instructions and prepared materials. Prefer a few well-sequenced tasks with checks for understanding over many activities completed superficially.

Help the important thing win

How do I win students’ attention?

Attention is limited and selective. Students cannot process everything in the room, on the screen or in an explanation at once.

What may be happening

Distraction can come from devices and noise, but also from the lesson itself: competing visuals, unclear questions or information presented before students know what to look for. Visible compliance does not guarantee mental focus.

A practical response

Reduce avoidable distractions, signal what matters and use a guiding question that gives students something specific to notice. Vary activity with purpose and require a response that reveals what received attention.

Plan for remembering, not exposure

Why do students forget?

Understanding something today does not guarantee access to it next week. Durable learning requires opportunities to retrieve and revisit knowledge.

What may be happening

Rereading and fluent explanations can create a feeling of familiarity without building independent recall. Forgetting is normal, especially when knowledge is encountered once and then left unused.

A practical response

Ask students to retrieve key ideas without notes, provide feedback and return to them after increasing intervals. Mix older knowledge with newer content and vary the context so students learn when an idea is useful.
