Baddeley revises the original three-part working-memory model to explain findings it could not readily accommodate.
He proposes the episodic buffer: a limited-capacity temporary store that represents information in a multidimensional code and binds material from the phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad, and long-term memory into coherent episodes. The buffer is accessible to conscious awareness and controlled by the central executive, but it provides storage rather than adding another executive process. This addition shifts attention from keeping subsystem contents separate to understanding how information is integrated across modalities and with prior knowledge.
For educators, the concept helps explain how words, images, spatial relations, and remembered knowledge can be combined into a meaningful representation, while reminding designers that this integrative workspace remains capacity limited.
