Garrison, Anderson, and Archer introduce the Community of Inquiry framework for understanding deep and meaningful learning in text-based computer conferencing. An educational community develops through the interaction of cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence.
Cognitive presence describes learners’ construction and confirmation of meaning through a practical-inquiry cycle: a triggering problem, exploration, integration of ideas, and resolution through application. Social presence is the capacity to present oneself as a real person, communicate openly, and develop cohesive relationships that sustain critical dialogue. Teaching presence includes designing the educational experience, facilitating discourse, and providing direct instruction when needed. The authors apply the framework to transcripts from a graduate online course and propose indicators for analysing discourse.
Presence categories are interdependent rather than isolated scores, and visible interaction does not by itself prove learning. For course design, the framework supports purposeful problems, sustained discussion, instructor guidance, knowledge integration, and opportunities to test conclusions, while later validation is needed across platforms, disciplines, and learner groups.
Gass and Mackey explain the interaction approach to second-language acquisition through four connected constructs: input, conversational interaction, feedback, and learner output. Exposure supplies linguistic data, but interaction can make that input more usable through negotiation of meaning, clarification, repetition, and modified forms.
Feedback—especially responses to non-target-like production—may help learners notice gaps between their language and the target system. Producing output pushes learners to test hypotheses, retrieve and proceduralise knowledge, and recognise what they cannot yet express. Interaction is therefore not assumed to cause acquisition merely because learners talk; researchers examine which features direct attention, create learning opportunities, and lead to durable change. Cooperative learning is more than seating students together: tasks and routines should create positive interdependence, individual accountability, promotive interaction, social skills, and reflection on group processes.
The teacher structures goals and resources, teaches students how to explain reasoning, ask questions, disagree constructively, and support participation, then monitors talk and intervenes with prompts that extend thinking rather than taking over the task. Gillies reviews how cooperative learning can strengthen inquiry-based science by making students’ reasoning, questioning, and evidence evaluation socially interactive. Inquiry asks learners to investigate authentic problems, propose and test explanations, compare ideas, and reconcile new evidence with prior understanding.
Productive cooperation, however, does not arise merely from placing students in groups. It also expands the purpose of creativity beyond innovation, economic growth, or personal productivity to include identity, participation, meaning, imagination, and alternative futures. Techniques cannot guarantee creativity because constraints and evaluations are contextual.
For education, the account supports access to varied materials and viewpoints, dialogue, experimentation, revision, and opportunities to contribute ideas, while cautioning against reducing creativity to decontextualised tests or celebratory slogans.

Gobet and Simon revisit the claim that chess experts’ memory advantage arises from thousands of familiar chunks stored in long-term memory. Using computerised copying and brief-recall tasks, they replicate and extend classic work while removing possible artefacts from manipulating physical pieces.
Skilled players reproduce meaningful game positions more accurately and organise placement into larger, chess-relevant groupings. The temporal pattern of placing pieces and relations among successive pieces support chunk-based encoding, while modest expertise effects for random positions require refinement of the simplest theory. The authors develop the idea that frequently encountered chunks can become templates with slots that rapidly encode variable information, explaining how masters store more position-specific detail than a fixed short-term capacity would permit. Expertise therefore reflects learned perceptual organisation and retrieval structures, not photographic memory or a general memory expansion.
Educationally, the findings illustrate how extensive domain experience changes what is perceived and remembered, while warning that expert advantages depend strongly on meaningful structure and do not transfer automatically to unrelated material.
Goddard, Hoy, and Hoy use social cognitive theory to explain collective teacher efficacy: a faculty’s shared belief in its capability to organise and execute actions needed to improve student learning. It is distinct from an individual teacher’s self-efficacy, although the two can influence one another.
Collective efficacy develops through interpretations of mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and affective states, filtered through analysis of the teaching task and the group’s competence. The review synthesises evidence linking school collective efficacy with achievement even after accounting for socioeconomic context, while emphasising that much evidence is correlational and measurement and causal processes need further study. Efficacy is not optimism detached from competence or material conditions.
Leaders can support it through authentic success, useful evidence, collaborative problem solving, capability-building, and attainable challenge, but claims should not be used to blame educators for structural disadvantage or substitute belief for resources and effective practice.
Goleman popularises emotional intelligence as a set of capacities involving awareness and regulation of one’s own emotions, motivation, empathy, and skilful relationships.
Drawing on neuroscience, psychology, education, and illustrative cases, he argues that cognitive test scores alone cannot explain how people manage impulses, recover from setbacks, understand others, cooperate, or navigate consequential decisions. Emotional habits develop through experience and can be supported through family life, schooling, and deliberate practice, making social and emotional learning a legitimate educational concern. The book’s broad “mixed” model combines abilities, personality tendencies, motivation, and social competencies, however, and some claims about prediction and trainability extend beyond the evidence available in 1995. Later research distinguishes ability, trait, and mixed models and debates their measurement and incremental validity.
Educational use should therefore teach specific, observable skills—emotion vocabulary, perspective taking, regulation strategies, and constructive interaction—while evaluating outcomes, respecting cultural variation, and avoiding the claim that a single emotional-intelligence score is more important than knowledge or general cognitive ability.

Goodyear argues that university teaching should be understood partly as design: the upstream work of creating tasks, structures, resources, tools, spaces, and social arrangements within which students act. Design differs from live, responsive interaction with learners and from later evaluation, although these phases inform one another in iterative cycles.
Teachers cannot directly design learning because learning activity is emergent and shaped by students’ intentions, histories, relationships, and circumstances. Carvalho and Goodyear examine how productive learning networks are constituted through relationships among people, knowledge, tasks, physical settings, and digital tools. Its analytical framework attends to epistemic design—what knowledge work participants undertake—set design—the material and digital resources available—and social design—roles, groupings, divisions of labour, and interaction. The book offers a vocabulary for analysing existing environments and extracting reusable design knowledge while preserving context, emergence, and participant agency. It shifts attention from delivering content toward configuring conditions for collaborative, networked learning.

Goodyear, Carvalho, and Yeoman present Activity-Centred Analysis and Design as a framework for understanding and improving complex learning environments. ACAD distinguishes what can be designed from emergent learning activity.
Designers can shape epistemic structures such as tasks and knowledge practices, social structures such as roles and groupings, and the physical and digital set of tools, spaces, and resources. Learners then co-configure these elements in action, producing activity that cannot be specified fully in advance. Analysis moves between observable activity and the structures that enable or constrain it, helping teams identify how elements interact rather than attributing outcomes to a single tool or teaching technique. The framework uses visual representations and collaborative design conversations to connect research, practitioner knowledge, and local evidence.
It does not promise control over learning or a context-free recipe. Its value lies in supporting systemic diagnosis, making design rationales discussable, and guiding iterative changes while recognising learner agency, material conditions, temporal development, and the difference between intended and enacted practice.
Graham defines blended learning systems as combinations of face-to-face instruction and computer-mediated instruction, then examines why such combinations were becoming increasingly common. The definition is deliberately broad because blends vary in level, proportion, sequence, purpose, and technology.
The chapter distinguishes blends at activity, course, programme, and institutional levels and identifies three common purposes: improving access and flexibility, improving pedagogy, and increasing cost effectiveness. It traces convergence between historically separate face-to-face and distributed-learning environments and illustrates models ranging from enhancement of classroom teaching to substantial transformation of time, place, participation, and interaction. The central design challenge is not adding an online component but combining environments so their affordances complement one another and weaknesses are addressed. Because “blended” can describe almost any contemporary course, evaluation requires specifying what is combined, for whom, why, and with what outcomes.
The framework supports intentional alignment among goals, activities, presence, media, learner support, and assessment rather than assuming a particular ratio produces better learning.
Graham and Harris argue that writing development depends jointly on fluent transcription and sophisticated self-regulation. Transcription processes such as handwriting, spelling, and keyboarding consume limited working-memory resources when they are slow or effortful, leaving less capacity for generating, organising, and revising ideas.
Writers must also regulate a complex, extended activity by setting goals, planning, monitoring progress, managing attention and motivation, selecting strategies, evaluating text, and revising. Evidence from developing and struggling writers generally supports both claims, although the authors note incomplete data and the need for replication. Improving only low-level mechanics or only high-level strategy is therefore insufficient for many learners. Instruction should build accurate, increasingly automatic transcription while explicitly modelling planning, composing, self-monitoring, and revision strategies, with guided practice and feedback.
Fluency is a means of releasing resources for composition, not an alternative to meaning. Similarly, self-regulation should operate on authentic writing purposes and knowledge rather than becoming a detached checklist of procedures.
Gray argues that children possess evolved capacities to learn through self-directed play, exploration, observation, conversation, and participation in community life.
Drawing on hunter-gatherer accounts, play research, democratic schooling, unschooling, and historical changes in childhood, he claims that autonomy, age-mixed interaction, access to tools and knowledgeable adults, and meaningful participation allow curiosity and social learning to flourish. Play is self-chosen, intrinsically motivated, imaginative, rule-governed by participants, and conducted in an alert but relatively non-threatened state; through it children practise problem solving, negotiation, emotional regulation, and responsibility. The book criticises expansion of compulsory, test-driven schooling and decline of independent activity, connecting these trends with stress and reduced agency. Its evidence combines research, historical interpretation, surveys, cases, and advocacy rather than randomised comparisons of entire educational systems.
Educational application should therefore distinguish the well-supported developmental value of play and autonomy from stronger causal claims, while ensuring safety, inclusion, rich environments, caring adults, and access to knowledge for children with differing needs and circumstances.

Gray distinguishes education, broadly understood as cultural transmission, from schooling organised by authorities around a prescribed curriculum. He argues that much human education has historically been self-directed through observation, play, exploration, conversation, and participation in community life.
The review connects evidence from hunter-gatherer societies with modern unschooling and democratic schools, where children control their time and participate in governance. Follow-up studies suggest that many participants pursue higher education, work, and adult life successfully, although samples are self-selecting and do not establish comparative causal effects. Effective self-directed education still requires a rich and safe environment: access to cultural tools, knowledgeable and caring people, age-mixed companions, freedom from bullying, and meaningful voice in community decisions. The article does not imply that children learn everything in isolation or that adults have no responsibilities.
Its educational challenge is to examine how autonomy, play, participation, and voluntary help can coexist with equitable access, protection, and opportunities that some learners may not obtain without deliberate support.
Gray and Chanoff report a follow-up study of former students from Sudbury Valley School, an ungraded democratic school where students choose their activities and share formal governance with staff. Interviews and records examine further education, employment, interests, and retrospective judgments.
Graduates entered varied occupations and many pursued college despite lacking conventional courses, grades, and transcripts; respondents commonly described strengths in responsibility, self-direction, confidence, and relationships with authority. Reported disadvantages included explaining the school to outsiders and, for some, gaps requiring later preparation. The study challenges predictions that unrestricted choice necessarily produces idleness or inability to function in structured institutions. It does not, however, provide random assignment, a representative national sample, or a matched comparison group.
Families and students selected this unusual school, and retrospective self-report can favour positive interpretations. The evidence is best read as demonstrating that this model can support viable pathways for some young people, not that democratic schooling will produce identical outcomes for every learner or context.
Gray and Feldman analyse 196 naturally occurring interactions between adolescents and children at least four years younger in an ungraded democratic school. Mixed-age partners were drawn together by shared interests, compatible play styles, affection, and complementary desires to nurture and be nurtured.
Older participants often adjusted games, explanations, language, or physical activity to make demanding participation possible for younger children, thereby supporting action within a zone of proximal development. Younger children also benefited adolescents by stimulating creativity, requiring implicit knowledge to be explained, and providing opportunities to practise care, patience, leadership, and responsibility. Because interactions were voluntary and embedded in everyday activity, support differed from adult-directed tutoring and participants could leave. The qualitative observational design illuminates possible developmental mechanisms but does not estimate effects against age-segregated comparison groups or show that every mixed-age interaction is beneficial.
Educationally, it suggests preserving safe, sustained opportunities for voluntary age mixing while attending to power, consent, inclusion, and adult responsibility rather than assuming proximity alone creates productive learning.
Greenberg describes daily life and the educational philosophy of Sudbury Valley School through short narratives about students, staff, play, age mixing, learning, governance, discipline, and responsibility. Students decide how to use their time; classes arise voluntarily; and the School Meeting, in which each student and staff member has one vote, controls rules, budgets, staffing, and institutional affairs.
A judicial process addresses alleged rule violations, joining freedom with due process and community accountability. The stories argue that curiosity, persistence, informal apprenticeship, conversation, and access to people and resources can generate substantial learning without a compulsory curriculum, grades, or age-based progression. The book is a founder’s interpretive account and advocacy text, not an independent outcome evaluation. Its examples demonstrate how one long-running school operationalises democratic education but cannot establish effects for all children.
Readers should distinguish the model’s principles from causal evidence and consider accessibility, safeguarding, additional learning needs, cultural context, and the resources required to sustain genuine choice.

Gronn proposes distributed leadership as an alternative unit of analysis to explanations centred on a single formal leader. An additive view counts leadership contributions made by multiple individuals, but a holistic view examines concertive action whose combined effect is more than independently aggregated behaviour.
Concertive patterns can arise through spontaneous collaboration, intuitive working relationships developed over time, or institutionalised practices and structures. Interdependence and coordination are therefore central: distributing tasks or appointing committees does not necessarily distribute leadership. The article connects distributed cognition, activity theory, and division of labour to leadership research and argues that analysts should study how influence is stretched across people, tools, routines, and situations. This perspective can reveal informal expertise and collective agency, but it does not imply that hierarchy, power, accountability, or individual responsibility disappear.

Gronn reassesses distributed leadership after the concept’s rapid theoretical and practical adoption. He argues that distributing influence is not historically new and that contemporary accounts have often neglected earlier small-group and division-of-labour scholarship.
The label can also obscure continuing hierarchy, power, and patterned combinations of individual and collective leadership. Rather than treating focused and distributed leadership as opposites, Gronn proposes attention to hybrid configurations in which formal leaders, informal contributors, teams, routines, and situational demands combine differently over time. Distribution is not synonymous with democracy: influence can be dispersed while authority and control remain unequal. Nor does a larger number of leadership actors guarantee coordination or effectiveness.
The article calls for stronger conceptual distinctions and empirical methods capable of examining actual configurations, their antecedents, and their consequences. For educational organisations, the implication is to map who influences what, through which interactions and structures, with what accountability and outcomes, rather than celebrating distributed leadership as an inherently collaborative reform or simply renaming delegated work.
