Second, educators work in genuine collaborative teams that examine curriculum, assessment, evidence, and classroom practice rather than merely sharing materials, handling logistics, or maintaining congenial relationships. Third, teams focus on results, establish common goals and assessments, study evidence, and use findings for continuous improvement. The article illustrates these principles through a school’s recurring inquiry into essential outcomes, indicators of learning, responses for students needing support, and extensions for those already proficient. Earl distinguishes assessment of learning, assessment for learning, and assessment as learning. Summative assessment certifies achievement; formative assessment supplies evidence teachers use to adapt instruction; assessment as learning places students at the centre as active monitors and regulators of their own learning.
Learners develop criteria, interpret feedback, compare current work with desired quality, identify misconceptions, and decide what to do next. The second edition connects these purposes with contemporary accounts of complex learning and illustrates classroom dilemmas, rubrics, lessons, and implementation across contexts. Assessment as learning does not mean leaving students to judge themselves without standards or teaching. Teachers deliberately model metacognition, make quality visible, design informative tasks, question thinking, and create safe opportunities for revision.
Grades alone provide too little guidance and can displace attention from learning. A balanced system uses each assessment purpose intentionally, with particular investment in feedback loops that build learners’ capacity to understand evidence and exercise informed agency.

Ebbinghaus established an experimental programme for studying memory by learning and relearning lists of deliberately meaningless syllables under controlled conditions, largely using himself as the participant.
He measured retention through “savings”: how much less time or repetition was needed to relearn material after a delay than during initial learning. The resulting observations showed rapid early loss followed by slower decline, later popularised as the forgetting curve. Its enduring contribution is methodological and conceptual: forgetting changes systematically with conditions, and durable learning can be investigated through controlled encoding, delay, retrieval, and relearning.
In this foundational experimental study, Ebbinghaus investigates memory with lists of nonsense syllables constructed to reduce the influence of existing meaning and association. Serving as his own participant across extensive trials, he standardises presentation and mastery, then measures retention by the time or repetitions saved when relearning material after intervals.
He reports the characteristic pattern of steep initial forgetting followed by a progressively slower decline, alongside effects of repetition, list length, and the distribution of practice. Repeated learning strengthens later savings, and distributing repetitions can yield more durable results than concentrating them in one sitting. The broader educational implication is that memory depends on time and practice conditions, and that planned revisiting and retrieval are needed if learning is expected to endure.
Edmonds argues against the assumption that poverty or family background makes low achievement inevitable.
Reviewing research on urban schools, he maintains that some schools serving economically disadvantaged pupils attain substantially stronger outcomes than comparable schools, making school organisation and instruction consequential. The effective-schools formulation emphasises strong instructional leadership, a pervasive focus on basic skills, an orderly and safe climate, high expectations for all pupils, frequent monitoring of progress, and allocation of time and resources toward learning. Edmondson introduces team psychological safety as a shared belief that a group is safe for interpersonal risk taking. In a multimethod field study of fifty-one manufacturing teams, she examines how safety, efficacy, context support, leader coaching, learning behaviour, and performance relate.
Psychological safety predicts behaviours such as asking for help, discussing errors, seeking feedback, experimenting, and reflecting; those learning behaviours in turn help explain performance. Team efficacy does not show the same relationship after safety is considered. Supportive structures and coaching contribute to the climate, showing that learning depends on both interpersonal belief and organisational conditions. Psychological safety is not comfort, agreement, low standards, or freedom from accountability.
It enables candour about uncertainty and mistakes so that demanding work can improve. For educational teams, the study supports leader inclusiveness, constructive responses to bad news, clear learning goals, and routines that make questions and dissent usable, while recognising that evidence is correlational and comes from a specific organisational setting.
Edmondson argues that organisations doing uncertain, interdependent knowledge work need psychological safety: a climate in which people can ask questions, admit mistakes, offer ideas, and challenge assumptions without fear of humiliation or retaliation. Drawing on research and cases from healthcare, aviation, manufacturing, technology, and other settings, she shows how silence can conceal weak signals and prevent learning, while candour supports experimentation, innovation, and adaptation.
Safety is not niceness, consensus, immunity from consequences, or reduced performance standards. High-performing environments combine psychological safety with clear, demanding expectations. Leaders build such conditions by framing work as a learning problem, acknowledging their own fallibility and dependence on others, inviting participation specifically, and responding productively when people speak up. They must also distinguish intelligent failures in new territory from preventable violations.
The book offers diagnostic questions and practical actions, while emphasising that safety emerges from repeated interpersonal and organisational signals rather than a slogan or one-time workshop.

Elman reconstructs the civil examination system of late imperial China using more than a thousand examination records and extensive social, political, literary, and institutional evidence from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing periods.
Examinations selected many officials and shaped elite education, publishing, family strategy, regional competition, cultural orthodoxy, and popular imagination. The study argues that the system established after 1370 differed substantially from earlier Tang and Song literary examinations and helped make Neo-Confucian learning authoritative in government and literati life. Although examination achievement offered a recognised route to status and created forms of geographic and social circulation, preparation required resources and networks, competition was extreme, and lineage, gender, wealth, and region structured access. The system also produced unintended cultural and political effects that outlasted its abolition in 1905.
Elman’s account complicates simple descriptions of examinations as either meritocratic equality or sterile memorisation by showing an evolving institution embedded in state power and social life.
Engeström develops expansive learning within cultural-historical activity theory to explain collective learning when the knowledge or practice needed does not yet exist. The unit of analysis is an activity system comprising subject, object, mediating tools, community, rules, and division of labour.

For education, the agenda connects classroom learning with wider productive activities and asks how learners participate in creating concepts capable of transforming the situations they address.
Ericsson reviews evidence that superior performance develops through prolonged engagement in deliberate practice rather than experience, repetition, or innate talent alone. Deliberate practice consists of demanding tasks selected to improve specific aspects of performance, clear goals, informative feedback, opportunities for correction, and repeated refinement just beyond current competence.
It is effortful and is typically supported by teachers, coaches, representations of expert performance, and access to structured training environments. Experts develop specialised mental representations that help them notice relevant patterns, plan, monitor, and adapt their actions. Mere years in a domain do not guarantee improvement because routine performance can become automated without continuing to target weaknesses. The chapter surveys developmental histories and laboratory evidence across domains while recognising constraints from motivation, resources, opportunity, health, and the structure of each field.
Educationally, the argument supports carefully sequenced practice with feedback and reflection, not mechanical drill or the claim that a single hour threshold guarantees expertise.
Ericsson and Simon provide a theoretical and methodological framework for using verbal reports as evidence about cognitive processes. Their information-processing account distinguishes concurrent think-aloud reports from retrospective reports and explains when verbalisation is likely to reflect information already in focal attention.
Asking participants simply to verbalise attended information may leave the underlying task process largely unchanged, whereas requests for explanations, reasons, or interpretations can introduce additional processing and alter performance. The book examines completeness, accuracy, memory effects, instructions, task demands, recording, transcription, segmentation, encoding, and analysis of protocols, grounding recommendations in experimental evidence. Verbal data are neither transparent access to thought nor inherently invalid introspection; their value depends on a model of how reports are generated and on procedures aligned with the research question. Researchers should combine protocols with behavioural evidence, avoid treating silence as absence of cognition, and report elicitation and coding decisions clearly.
