Hadwin, Järvelä, and Miller distinguish three modes of regulation in collaborative learning. Self-regulation involves an individual’s adaptive control of cognition, motivation, emotion, and behaviour in relation to personal goals.
Co-regulation is a temporary, asymmetric process in which another person or tool supports, prompts, or helps appropriate regulation. Socially shared regulation occurs when group members collectively negotiate goals, monitor progress and conditions, control strategies and motivation, and evaluate joint activity. It is not the sum of individual self-regulation or simply successful cooperation. Groups move among modes as tasks, expertise, and difficulties change, and regulation can be productive or maladaptive. Research therefore needs process-sensitive evidence—talk, actions, traces, physiological or affective indicators—rather than relying only on retrospective questionnaires or final performance.
Instruction can make planning, monitoring, emotional challenges, strategy decisions, and reflection visible through shared tools and prompts, while gradually building group agency. Collaboration scripts should support coordination without replacing learners’ responsibility or assuming every group member experiences the same goals and conditions.

Hakkarainen argues that educational technology transforms learning only when it participates in transformed social practices for creating and working with knowledge. Building on knowledge-building research, he moves beyond accounts of learning as individual acquisition or participation alone toward a knowledge-practice perspective.
Ideas, questions, models, texts, tools, and other epistemic objects are developed through sustained collective activity. Placing student ideas in a database is insufficient if classroom routines, authority, assessment, division of labour, and expectations still reward reproduction and isolated work. Innovative knowledge practices must be cultivated locally through iterative collaboration among teachers, learners, and researchers, with technologies adapted to support inquiry, versioning, connection, reflection, and collective advancement. Change is developmental and institutionally demanding rather than produced by platform features.
For design and evaluation, the article redirects attention from technology use or engagement counts toward what participants repeatedly do with knowledge, how responsibility and expertise are distributed, whether ideas improve, and how tools and practices co-evolve over time.
This Finnish-language book develops progressive inquiry as a framework for organizing learning around sustained, communal work with knowledge. Learners begin from meaningful problems, examine what they already know, formulate questions and tentative working theories, seek new information, critically evaluate explanations, and generate increasingly focused questions.

Hakkarainen and colleagues conceptualise expertise as a networked, relational achievement rather than knowledge contained wholly within exceptional individuals. Competent activity depends on interaction, shared problem solving, division of cognitive labour, and access to socially developed conceptual and material tools.
Drawing on workplace studies and psychological, sociological, and educational research, the book examines communities, organisations, professional networks, knowledge creation, innovation, and development of expertise. Networks allow participants to locate complementary competence, circulate and transform knowledge, and address problems too complex for one person, but connection alone does not guarantee learning. Trust, shared objects, communication practices, boundary crossing, and structures that support contribution and critique matter. Individuals still require deep knowledge and agency; distributed expertise is not a reason to neglect personal learning or accountability.
For education, the perspective supports authentic collective problems, participation in knowledge practices, access to varied expertise, and tools that make developing ideas shareable. Evaluation should examine changes in both individual capability and the network’s capacity to create and use knowledge.

Halonen and colleagues examine how Finnish sixth graders use digital technologies for learning, their technology-related attitudes, and associations with academic wellbeing. The study distinguishes frequency of use from the quality and purpose of engagement.
Students reported relatively limited school use compared with everyday digital activity, and technology orientations were not uniformly beneficial. Interest in challenging digital problem solving and confidence in learning new technologies related differently to engagement and exhaustion than habitual or entertainment-oriented use. Broader experiences of school remained important, showing that devices cannot be separated from pedagogy, motivation, and the learning environment. The cross-sectional self-report design identifies patterns and associations rather than showing that technology use causes wellbeing or achievement.
Measures also reflect a particular national, age, and historical context. The practical implication is to ask what students do with technology, how activity connects with meaningful learning, and which learners experience support or strain, rather than treating more screen use or more devices as an educational outcome in itself.
Hambrick, Macnamara, and Oswald review the evidence behind the deliberate-practice account of expert performance.
They distinguish carefully designed practice from mere repetition and examine definitional, measurement, and causal problems in the literature. Their synthesis concludes that deliberate practice is important but does not by itself explain all differences in attained performance; abilities, opportunity, accumulated experience, and other person and environment factors also matter. For educators, the article supports purposeful, challenging practice with clear goals and feedback while cautioning against treating hours of practice as a complete explanation of expertise.
The review therefore presents expertise as a multi-causal developmental outcome rather than the product of one training variable.
Hamilton and colleagues systematically review research on immersive virtual reality used as an educational tool. Their synthesis covers headset-based environments across subjects and educational levels, examining study designs, learning outcomes, engagement, usability, and implementation.
Many studies report positive affective responses and promising gains in knowledge, skills, spatial understanding, or retention, especially when immersion enables experiences that are dangerous, expensive, inaccessible, or difficult to represent otherwise. Evidence is nevertheless heterogeneous and often based on small samples, short interventions, novelty effects, weak comparison conditions, and immediate tests. Immersion can also introduce cognitive overload, distraction, cybersickness, equipment and staffing costs, accessibility concerns, and practical classroom constraints. The review therefore does not support replacing established instruction simply because VR is engaging.
Productive use begins with a learning need and aligns interaction, guidance, representation, feedback, and assessment with that goal. Stronger longitudinal and comparative studies are required to establish when immersive VR adds value beyond less costly media and for which learners.
Hargreaves and Fink argue that educational leadership should improve learning in ways that endure, spread responsibly, and do not damage people or neighbouring systems. Their seven principles propose that sustainable leadership matters, lasts, spreads, is socially just, is resourceful, promotes diversity, and engages actively with the surrounding environment.
Improvement should preserve worthwhile learning across leadership succession, develop capacity beyond a few exceptional individuals, and avoid exhausting teachers or transferring costs to other schools and communities. Distributed responsibility can strengthen continuity, but only when supported by learning, trust, time, and coherent structures. Diversity of ideas and practices helps systems adapt, whereas standardisation and rapid turnover can undermine resilience. Leaders must consider long-term consequences, not just short-cycle performance indicators or visible innovations.
The framework is normative and case-informed rather than a controlled causal model. Its practical value lies in asking who benefits, what resources are consumed, whether capability remains after leaders leave, how change affects the wider system, and whether improvement can be renewed without becoming dependent on unsustainable pressure.

Hargreaves and Fullan frame high-quality teaching as professional capital built from three interacting resources. Human capital is the knowledge, skill, judgement, and capability of individual teachers.
Social capital lies in relationships through which educators exchange expertise, challenge practice, and improve decisions. Decisional capital is the professional judgement developed through experience, reflection, evidence, and responsibility in complex situations. Investing only in talented individuals is insufficient when organisational conditions isolate them; collaboration without expertise or disciplined judgement can also reproduce weak practice. Systems should therefore recruit well, provide strong preparation and induction, create purposeful collaborative cultures, retain and develop teachers over time, and involve the profession in improvement. The authors contrast this investment strategy with a business-capital approach based on short training, scripts, surveillance, competition, and rapid turnover.
Professional capital is not protection from evidence or accountability. It combines collective responsibility, capable judgement, and continuous learning so educators can respond intelligently to varied learners rather than merely comply with externally packaged solutions.

Hargreaves and O’Connor distinguish collaborative professionalism from routine professional collaboration. Working together becomes professionally consequential when it is deliberate, evidence-informed, embedded in the organisation, and directed toward improved learning and equity rather than meetings or congeniality.
Drawing on five international cases, they identify ten connected tenets including collective efficacy, collaborative inquiry, collective responsibility, collaborative initiative, mutual dialogue, joint work, common meaning and purpose, collaborating with students, big-picture thinking, and attention to both formal and informal collaboration. The cases are illustrative rather than proof that one model transfers unchanged across systems.
Educators should examine which collaborations deepen knowledge and improve learner experience, which merely consume time, and how power, workload, student voice, cultural context, and measurable consequences shape the value of working together.

Harlen examines summative assessment used for reporting, certification, selection, accountability, and evaluation, and asks how methods should be judged. Four recurring criteria are validity, reliability, impact on teaching and learning, and resources required.
External tests can offer standardisation and comparability but sample limited outcomes, create measurement error, and can narrow curriculum or pedagogy when stakes are high. Teachers’ judgements draw on richer evidence gathered over time and across contexts, but require clear criteria, shared standards, moderation, and quality assurance to become dependable. Assessment methods are not inherently formative or summative; purpose and use determine their function, and classroom evidence can contribute to both. A balanced system aligns intended learning, teaching, tasks, interpretation, and reporting while making uncertainty visible.
Harlen supports greater use of moderated teacher assessment rather than treating tests as the only objective evidence. Decisions should consider consequences for learners and curriculum alongside technical properties, ensuring that efforts to increase reliability do not undermine validity by measuring a narrower version of learning.

Harris reviews distributed leadership as a perspective on school improvement and asks whether its appeal is supported by sufficient conceptual and empirical clarity. Distributed leadership shifts attention from the principal alone toward leadership activity arising through interactions among formal leaders, teachers, teams, and organisational structures.
Evidence from improving schools suggests that multiple sources of influence, teacher leadership, collaboration, and capacity building can support change. Distribution is not automatically beneficial, however. It may be unplanned, fragmented, coercive, or used to delegate workload without authority; power relations and the principal’s role remain consequential. Harris distinguishes descriptive claims about how leadership is distributed from normative claims that it should be distributed and improve outcomes. The literature available in 2004 offered promising associations but limited causal evidence about which configurations work under which conditions.
Schools should therefore develop expertise, trust, participation, coordination, and accountability deliberately, then evaluate effects on teaching and learning. Merely multiplying leadership roles or labelling existing committees “distributed” does not constitute improvement.
Harris synthesises evidence on relationships among distributed leadership, organisational change, and outcomes. The review draws across leadership, school improvement, school effectiveness, and organisational-change research.
It finds indications that leadership distribution can relate positively to change and performance, but effects depend on the pattern and quality of distribution rather than the number of participants alone. Coordinated forms that mobilise expertise, build capacity, and connect influence with shared purposes differ from fragmented delegation or participation without authority. Formal leadership remains important in creating conditions, developing people, brokering relationships, and securing coherence. Distributed leadership is therefore neither synonymous with democracy nor inherently effective. The evidence base is methodologically difficult: constructs vary, leadership and outcomes influence one another, and much research is correlational or context-specific.
Harris takes a cautiously normative position while calling for stronger empirical studies of mechanisms and consequences. Practitioners should examine who exercises influence, how work is coordinated, whose expertise and voice count, and whether particular configurations measurably improve organisational learning and student experience.

Harris and Jones reflect on school leadership during the early COVID-19 disruption, when closures, remote teaching, public-health requirements, and uncertainty transformed everyday educational work. They argue that leadership became necessarily adaptive, responsive, and distributed because no single leader possessed the information or capacity to manage rapidly changing conditions alone.
Trust, collaboration, communication, networks, and collective problem solving became practical necessities. Leaders also had to protect wellbeing, respond to inequitable access and family circumstances, support teachers learning unfamiliar practices, and make decisions with incomplete evidence. The crisis exposed the limits of rigid plans and heroic-leader models while increasing the importance of context-sensitive professional judgement. Digital technology enabled continuity but did not remove social, pedagogical, or equity challenges.
This short editorial is a contemporaneous conceptual response, not an empirical evaluation of leadership effects, and its claims should be tested against later evidence. Its durable implication is to build collaborative capacity, relational trust, learning networks, and organisational resilience before emergencies rather than attempting to improvise them only after disruption occurs.
Harris and Muijs argue that teachers’ leadership beyond their own classrooms is an important capacity for school improvement. Drawing on research and school examples, they describe teacher leaders as influencing colleagues, leading pedagogical development, coordinating improvement work, coaching or mentoring, and contributing to collective decisions without necessarily holding senior posts.
The book connects leadership with professional collaboration, development, and improved teaching and learning rather than treating it simply as delegated administration. It examines roles, responsibilities, organisational conditions, professional learning, and ways schools can foster participation. Support from principals, time, trust, recognition, clear purposes, and cultures that value teachers’ expertise enable teacher leadership; hierarchy, isolation, role ambiguity, and overloaded volunteers can constrain it. The authors do not suggest that appointing more formal post-holders automatically raises achievement.
Their central proposition is that schools improve when they deliberately develop teachers’ agency and expertise, distribute meaningful influence, connect leadership activity to classroom learning, and create structures through which colleagues can learn and act together.

Hartkamp-Bakker and Martens investigate how graduates of Sudbury schools understand the lasting effects of radically self-directed, democratically governed schooling. They interviewed 14 alumni from eight schools in the Netherlands, Israel, and the United States and analysed the retrospective accounts using reflexive thematic analysis.
Participants linked learning to self-chosen meaningful activities, mixed-age relationships, informal interaction, shared governance, and responsibility for real community decisions rather than imposed curricula, classes, assessments, or standard progression. Graduates described developing initiative, self-regulation, adaptability, communication, organisational and civic literacy, resilience, and confidence in finding purpose under uncertainty. The authors interpret these accounts through experiential education, Self-Determination Theory, and evolutionary-developmental perspectives, suggesting that autonomy and participation may support capacities relevant to lifelong learning and social engagement. The study offers rich cross-cultural testimony but cannot establish causal long-term effects: its small, self-selected sample and retrospective design invite selection and recall biases.
Its contribution is an exploratory account of how alumni themselves connect democratic school experiences with adult development.
Hattie synthesises more than 800 meta-analyses concerning influences on school-aged students’ achievement, organising findings around the student, home, school, teacher, curricula, and teaching approaches.
Rather than presenting a simple league table of techniques, the book develops a model of “visible” teaching and learning: teachers clarify challenging intentions and success criteria, seek evidence of their impact, interpret learning through students’ eyes, and adapt instruction accordingly. Feedback, teacher clarity, formative evaluation, relationships, and students’ active monitoring of learning receive particular attention. Hattie uses effect sizes to compare bodies of research and proposes a benchmark for discussing whether an influence has greater than typical impact. The synthesis is broad and influential, but its aggregate estimates should not be treated as context-free causal prescriptions; included meta-analyses vary in design, quality, population, outcome, and definition.
The practical message is disciplined evaluative thinking: educators should make learning visible, examine evidence of actual effects, and refine teaching in response.

It proposes eight connected tasks: agree on what a year’s progress means, expect every student to make that progress, develop dependable assessment and evaluation tools, understand instructional impact, ensure teachers have expertise in diagnosis and intervention, stop practices unsupported by evidence, strengthen collaboration, and communicate the profession’s collective responsibility. Variation among teachers and schools is treated as a source of information for improvement, not merely a basis for ranking. Leaders should create conditions in which educators jointly examine student work, moderate judgements, discuss evidence, learn from high-impact practice, and intervene when progress is insufficient. The report is an advocacy and synthesis document rather than a new systematic review, so its proposals depend on the quality and interpretation of the underlying evidence.
Its central idea is collective efficacy: professional autonomy should be accompanied by shared standards, transparent evidence, and collaborative responsibility for every learner’s growth.
Hattie and Timperley review evidence about feedback and propose a model explaining when it supports learning. Effective feedback reduces the gap between a learner’s current understanding or performance and a desired goal.
It addresses three questions—Where am I going? How am I going? and Where to next?—and can operate at four levels: the task, the process used to perform it, self-regulation, and the self as a person. Task and process information can correct errors and improve strategies; self-regulatory feedback can strengthen monitoring, help-seeking, and persistence. General praise directed at the self usually conveys little information about how to improve and may distract from the task. Effects therefore depend on timing, specificity, difficulty, learner knowledge, goals, and whether the recipient can act on the information.
Feedback is not merely something teachers deliver: learners also generate and seek it, while teachers use evidence to adjust instruction. The review cautions that feedback can be ineffective or harmful when it is unclear, controlling, or poorly matched to the learner.
Hemminki-Reijonen and colleagues develop a pedagogical design for combining generative AI with immersive virtual reality in higher education. The qualitative descriptive project had two phases.
In a needs analysis, ideas from 66 educators were grouped into AI acting as a character, emerging technologies supporting student learning, and technologies assisting teachers. The design phase applied these needs to sustainability education and created two generative-AI characters: Tero as an information source and Madida as a learning companion. Iterative expert testing and interviews indicated that the characters addressed nine of twelve identified needs. The paper treats AI characters as pedagogical roles embedded in an environment, not merely as technical features, and discusses opportunities for contextual information, dialogue, guidance, engagement, and teacher support. It also identifies unmet needs and the necessity of further refinement.
Because the study evaluates needs and a design concept rather than comparative learning outcomes, it does not demonstrate that the system improves achievement. Its main contribution is a research-informed design process and testable framework for subsequent implementation and evaluation.
