Mitra recounts the “Hole in the Wall” experiments, in which internet-connected computers were placed where groups of children could explore them with little or no direct instruction. He argues that children working together can learn basic computer use, search for information, teach one another, and sometimes engage with material well beyond the expected curriculum.
These observations led to self-organized learning environments: small groups share a computer, investigate a challenging “big question,” discuss possible answers, and present what they discover. Adults create conditions, pose motivating questions, encourage persistence, and admire progress rather than delivering step-by-step explanations. The book challenges schooling organized primarily around memorization and standardized transmission, proposing that curiosity, peer interaction, access to information, and learner autonomy can produce sustained engagement. It also offers classroom guidance for trying the approach.

In this TED Prize talk, Mitra connects his “Hole in the Wall” experiments with a proposal for Self-Organised Learning Environments (SOLEs).
He recounts placing Internet-connected computers where children had little prior access and observing groups teach one another basic operations and pursue complex questions. His proposed learning environment combines small groups, shared computers, large motivating questions, freedom to investigate, and encouragement from remote adult volunteers—the “Granny Cloud.” Mitra’s School in the Cloud is presented as a physical learning lab supported through online resources and mentoring, especially where expert teachers are scarce. The talk argues that curiosity, peer interaction, and access can produce surprising learning without continuous direct instruction. Because a TED talk selects illustrative cases rather than reporting a controlled synthesis, its claims should be considered alongside independent evidence and local safeguards.
